Who it's aimed at
This qualification is aimed at individuals who want to develop their advanced knowledge, skills and professional behaviours required to operate with autonomy and professional judgement in occupational Health and Safety roles within an organisation.
This qualification is applicable to any sector as all business have a duty to manage health and safety.
This qualification has been accredited by IOSH and by gaining this qualification, candidates who successfully complete the qualification and meet IOSH’s 2-year experience requirements should be eligible to apply for Certified Membership and use the post-nominal letters CertIOSH. This qualification also supports progression to Chartered membership.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must be aged 18 or above and must be in a role, or have access to an organisational context, that enables them to generate valid evidence for the qualification.
Roles may include:
- Site supervisor and Site managers
- Team Managers, Heads of Departments and Directors who are responsible for Health and Safety
- Health and Safety Manager
- Health and Safety Advisor
- Health and Safety Officer
- Compliance Managers
Units options
Mandatory units include:
- There are ten mandatory units, which are listed below, as well as an additional mandatory unit which will be selected in agreement with you by your Assessor.
Principles of Health and Safety Legislation and Regulatory Frameworks
- Promote a positive Health and Safety culture in your organisation
- Introduce and coordinate effective communication channels for Health and Safety information
- Monitor and maintain individual and organisational competence in Health and Safety matters
- Identify, evaluate and manage Health and Safety risks
- Design and introduce proactive monitoring systems for organisational Health and Safety
- Design and introduce reactive monitoring systems for organisational Health and Safety
- Design and maintain response systems and procedures for dealing with Health and Safety emergencies
- Review systems for organisational Health and Safety management
- Research, evaluate and maintain current Health and Safety best practice
Optional Units include:
There are also optional units for this qualification. One will be chosen specific to the individual and what they do in their role.
- Design and introduce an organisational Health and Safety policy
- Review and Update an Organisational Health and Safety Policy

Please note, to apply for Certified status, you also need to be able to demonstrate you have completed this qualification by providing a copy of your certificate, have least two years of professional experience and demonstrate your continuing professional development (CPD).
